The Six of Cups: What the Past Hands You

🎧 Some things hit different when you hear them. Press play and let this one ride with you.
The sky's quiet today. Venus and Jupiter are still having coffee, the window's still open until November 11th, and the Sun is still walking through the Six of Cups.
Have you ever looked back on something from your childhood, or an earlier part of your life, and realized you remember it differently now? Maybe you didn't appreciate what you had at the time. Maybe you finally understand why something happened. Or maybe back then you were wearing the glasses of pessimism, and now you've got the glasses of optimism on, and the same past looks totally different.
And why is the Sun going back at all? Because of where he just came from. He just walked out of the Five of Cups, staring at what spilled. And when you lose something, you go looking for what's still yours. Loss sends you home. You reach back for the last time things felt whole.
Remember the bridge in the Five of Cups, behind the figure in black? That bridge leads back home. The Six of Cups is what's waiting on the other side of it. The Sun finally turned around, crossed the bridge, and walked back into the yard.
So let's slow down and actually walk into that card. Because there's more in that picture than "nostalgia."
Step Into the Picture
Look at the scene.
A little boy hands a little girl a cup full of white flowers. Daffodils. Behind them, a beautiful country home. More cups with flowers lined up in front of them.
And off at the very edge of the picture, there's a man in blue with a walking stick, heading toward the house.
Most people only see the kids. But watch that man. He's the one coming home. He's been gone a while. Maybe a long walk. Maybe a long life. And he's walking back toward the place where it started.
The kids in the front? That's his past. Still there. Still playing in the yard. The past isn't behind him. It's right in front of the house he's walking toward.
That's the Six of Cups. The past isn't gone. It's still in the present, and it's still handing you something.
The Daffodils
And look at what's being handed over. Not money. Not a trophy. Flowers in a cup.
Daffodils are the flower that comes back. Every spring, after the cold, they push back up out of the same ground. Cheer. Happiness. Return.
So the gift in this card isn't a thing. It's a feeling coming back. The joy you had before life got heavy, pushing back up out of the same ground it grew in the first time.
And notice who's giving. A child, to another child. No angle. No expectation. No receipt.
When's the last time you gave something like that? Or received something like that, without immediately trying to figure out what you owed?
Sometimes we don't lose the things we love. We just stop making room for them.
Six: Harmony in Body, Mind, and Spirit
Six is the nurturer. And in the tarot, six also carries harmony. Body, mind, and spirit lining back up.
That's what a good memory does. It doesn't just make you smile. It puts you back in your body. You remember the smell of the kitchen. The sound of the screen door. The feeling of being a kid who wasn't worried about the light bill.
For a second, everything lines up.
That's the medicine in this card. Not living in the past. Visiting it long enough to remember what harmony felt like, so you know what you're aiming for now.
When the Past Comes Back to the Present
The Six of Cups also says the past can come walking back into your life. Literally.
Somebody you grew up with. An old friend. A cousin. A neighbor. A face you haven't seen in years, showing up at the store, in your inbox, in your feed.
And sometimes it's not a person. It's a place. A song. A smell. A family recipe. A box in the closet.
Either way, the card asks: what did they bring with them?
And if you're carrying a problem right now, this card sometimes points to where it started. The root might be back in that yard. Not to blame anybody. Just to understand why it hits the way it does.
The Other Side of the Card
Now, every card has a shadow. And the Six of Cups' shadow is clinging.
Holding onto the past so tight you can't move forward. Nostalgia that turns into a hiding place. Acting younger than the situation calls for because growing up in this one moment feels like too much.
And sometimes the memories that come back aren't sweet. Not everybody's childhood yard was safe.
And ask yourself what you're really missing. Do you miss the person, or do you miss who you were when you were with them? Do you miss the house, or the feeling of having somewhere you belonged?
So the question isn't, "Was it all good?" It's, "What from back there still feeds me, and what am I still letting drive?"
Visit memory lane. Pick up what belongs to you. Don't move back onto the street.
Mid-Morning: Moon in Virgo Square Uranus
Now here's where today gets a little bumpy.
The Moon is in Virgo, Mercury's sign. And mid-morning she squares Uranus, retrograde in Gemini, also Mercury's sign. And Mercury himself is retrograde in Scorpio, reviewing the story. So the messenger owns both sides of this square, and he's walking backward.
Virgo wants to sort. Clean. Organize. Fix. Uranus wants to break out. Change everything. Do the opposite of what anybody suggests, just because they suggested it.
So watch yourself this morning. Don't be hasty. Don't jump to conclusions. Don't react to every little thing somebody says. That rebellious streak may want to do the exact opposite of whatever you're told, simply because you were told.
You might feel impatient with your duties. Restless. Like you need to be free and do something completely different. Maybe even a little wild.
And here's how it connects to the card. Virgo with the Six of Cups wants to go through the box. Sort the memories. Keep this, toss that. Uranus wants to dump the whole box in the trash and start over.
Don't make permanent decisions in a temporary mood. A memory isn't an instruction. An unexpected realization isn't automatically a decision.
There may be some emotional unrest under the surface, and it can rub against your peace of mind and the people around you, especially the ones making emotional demands. You might want to change a whole lot about your life all at once. Just remember, this one passes. It's a few hours, not a new life.
Some of you won't feel it inside. You'll feel it through other people. Somebody acts erratic. A plan gets flipped. The routine gets shaken.
Breathe. Let the dust settle before you sweep.
After Dinner: Moon Sextile the Sun
By the end of the day, after dinner and before bed, the Moon sextiles the Sun in Scorpio. Earth to water. The jolt from the morning finally settles.
This is a breathing space. A moment of calm inside and out. You can stop and take stock of yourself without getting swept up in the rush.
Even if the day didn't go smoothly, you get a little window to catch your breath and look at it clearly.
So when you look back tonight, check which glasses you're wearing. The pessimism pair, or the optimism pair? Same past. Different view.
And it's good for people. Friends. Groups. You can understand what somebody else needs without losing sight of what you need. Whether you're leading or following, being around others helps tonight.
Opportunities may come from unexpected corners. Small ways. Through friends.
That's the Six of Cups again. The good thing doesn't always arrive with a marching band. Sometimes it's a little kid holding out a cup of flowers.
Take the Cup
And keep an eye on tomorrow. The Sun is standing in Mercury's bounds now, and the messenger is walking backward right into the heart of the king. The cazimi is coming.
But tonight, just take the cup.
So ask yourself:
What gift from my past have I been too busy to receive?
What feeling from back home is trying to grow back up?
What am I holding onto because it still brings something good into my life, and what am I holding onto because I haven't figured out how to let it go?
Am I about to throw out something valuable just because I'm restless?
Who's walking back toward me, and what did they bring?
The man with the walking stick is almost home. The kids are still in the yard. The flowers are still in the cup.
Take it. You don't have to stay. But take it.
Know thyself. Balance your energy.
