The Mirror: Judgment, Self-Doubt & Finding Your Reason to Rise

The Mirror: a man looks into a mirror and sees his brighter, freer self in the reflection

🎧 Some things hit different when you hear them. Press play and let this one ride with you.

The Call

"Only God can judge me." "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me." Different sayings. Same job. We grew up on these. We quote them like armor.

So how come when somebody tells you something about yourself, your reaction is nothing but hurt? One sentence, and it rides with you for a week.

"It's not right to judge." Says who? What's your relationship with the word judgment? Better yet, what happens in you when you feel judged? Does your chest get tight? Do you go quiet? Do you get loud? Do you start building your case before they finish talking? Pay attention to that. That reaction is telling you something.

Not every opinion deserves your agreement. Some of it is other people's baggage. But before you throw it out, ask yourself one thing: is there anything here worth looking at? Sometimes it stings because there's something to face. Sometimes it's an old wound getting pressed. Figure out which.

Ever think being judged is the mirror being held up to you? Oh, what, you don't like the reflection? Change it. Blaming the mirror doesn't change the face.

No matter how dark your past is, whatever you've done, whatever you've been through, it doesn't have to decide what comes next. But change only comes after a realization, and the first one is simple: the past is the past. You can't rewrite it, but you can stop rereading it every night.

Judgment has a bad reputation. We hear the word and think punishment. But recognition is not the same as punishment. Judgment is also discernment. It's how you know what to keep and what to cut. Without it, how will you know where you need to shift?

Wake up.

The Dimmed Light

Yes, that past led you down the road of self-doubt, disappointment, blame, depression. Hopeful Ted turned into negative Ned on the downward spiral. And it didn't happen overnight. It was one letdown, then another, then you started expecting the letdown. Then you started looking for it.

That snowball rolling downhill, the one you can't seem to slow down, has a lot to do with your attitude toward life, toward people, and toward yourself. Because what you expect, you start to see everywhere. Expect betrayal, you find it. Expect failure, you find it. Disappointment started talking louder than possibility, and you stopped looking up.

Turn pessimism into optimism. Not fake positivity. Not pretending it's all good. Just leaving the door cracked for something better.

Find your reason to rise out of bed every morning. Not a reason that sounds impressive to somebody else. Yours. What gets you up? What gets you moving? If you don't have an answer, that's your first assignment.

Too Many Options

The way out of the inner crisis is hope in the outer world. But isn't the outer world what got most of us here? The job. The relationship. The family. The money. The phone in your hand.

Or is it? Is it really the world's fault, or our lack of control over our desires in the material world? The world offers. You choose.

And there's a lot to choose from. Everything floating right in front of you, every one of them promising something. Too many options, and the options have you scared to commit to one. Scared you'll pick wrong. Scared you'll miss out. So you pick nothing, or you pick everything and finish none of it.

Having options is not the same as having direction. Keeping every possibility open can become another way of staying still.

So look at what you keep reaching for. Does it feed the moment, or the life you say you want? Are you picking it because it matters, or because it distracts you from something you don't want to face? Some of those dreams are real. Some of them are smoke. There's a difference between giving yourself time and giving yourself another excuse.

Morning

We're all here to find our own level of success, whatever that looks like for you. Not your parents' version. Not your ex's version. Not the internet's version. Yours. What would make your days feel like your own?

You're allowed to want more than relief from what hurts. Want the warmth. Want the joy you don't have to fake. Want a life you're glad to wake up to.

We're all capable. But are you willing? Willing to look. Willing to hear it. Willing to keep going after the first burst of motivation wears off. That's the million-dollar question.

Liberate yourself. Now. Not Monday. Not next month. Now.

Control those inner demons. You don't have to kill them. You have to run them instead of letting them run you. Master the ego for success that lasts. Take the lesson. Leave the sentence behind.

The question was never whether somebody has the right to judge you. The question is: what are you going to do with what you've learned about yourself?

Know thyself. Balance your energy.
