Eight Standing, Two Spilled: The Sun in the Five of Cups

6 min read
A man in a long black coat stands on a riverbank at dusk, head bowed over two spilled goblets, while a row of goblets stands on the wall behind him and a stone bridge leads to a lit house.
A man stands before a distorted mirror reflecting an ideal family life, contemplating his path and the influence of astrology on his dreams and reality.

🎧 Some things hit different when you hear them. Press play and let this one ride with you.

Eight things are working. Two aren't. So why do the two get all the airtime?

Have you ever noticed how someone can have a lot going for them from the outside looking in, but when they speak, their focus is the opposite of what you'd expect? Eight out of ten things are going right. And all they talk about is the two.

Nothing in this world is perfect. So why do that? Because focusing on what could have been creates a mood. And that mood becomes an attitude about life.

The full moon lit the window. Tuesday, the receipt printed. Wednesday asked whether you kept your word to yourself. Today asks something underneath all of it: what are you looking at? Because you can't see the lit window if you're staring at the spill.

Why the Two Get the Microphone

The things a person talks about most reveal less about what's happening in their life and more about what has their attention.

The eight that are working don't need your attention anymore. The two that aren't are demanding it. Progress gets normal fast. The thing you prayed for becomes your new normal. The thing you worked years for becomes the background of your life.

Meanwhile, the unresolved thing stays loud. So you can be living in the middle of your own progress while you're mentally living inside your problems.

And the two usually aren't random. They're tied to an expectation, an identity, a picture of what your life was supposed to look like. Am I loved? Am I enough? Did I get where I thought I would? Now the two aren't just two things that didn't pan out. They've become a verdict on the other eight. They get veto power.

Eight things can be proof of a good life. Two things can become the story you tell about it.

That doesn't automatically make somebody ungrateful. Sometimes they're anxious. Sometimes they're a perfectionist. But there's a difference between acknowledging what isn't working and letting it define the whole experience.

Here's the test. If those two things got fixed tomorrow, would you finally see the eight? Or would your attention go find two new things?

If the missing pieces keep changing but the dissatisfaction stays the same, the two weren't the whole problem. Check the measuring stick.

The Sun Is Still Staring at the Spill

At the full moon, the Sun was staring at the spilled cups. Now he's halfway through that room, and he's still staring. Sun in Scorpio, in Mars's house, Mars's bounds, and Mars's decan. The warrior's ground.

Picture the figure in black, head down, staring at three spilled cups. Two cups are still standing right behind him. And past them, a bridge leading back home. He doesn't see any of it. He's facing the spill.

In real life it's usually eight standing and two spilled. And some people still won't turn around. The loss is real. Nobody's asking you to pretend it didn't matter. But why does it get to speak for the whole picture?

The Sun has help. Mars in Leo, holding the Sun's keys. Mutual reception. The Sun has the tools to turn around. And Mars's tools cut. So can you cut the cord to what could have been, turn around, and take the first steps toward the bridge?

Repair or Release?

Why does a loss feel like the end of the world to some people? Sometimes you're not just grieving what you had. You're grieving what you thought you were going to have. The future you pictured.

Before you call it finished, ask yourself: Did you really exhaust every option for repair? Every amend? Every conversation? And was there willingness on both sides? Sometimes we make a permanent decision from a temporary emotional state.

But exhausting the options doesn't mean exhausting yourself trying to make another person participate. You can own your part. You can't do everybody's part.

And who told you things last forever? Some things end. That's how cycles work. Sometimes there's something to repair. Sometimes there's something to release. Be honest about which one is in front of you.

If you want to turn the situation around, you have to turn yourself around. The cups behind you aren't going to walk around front to get your attention.

A Fact-Finding Day

The Moon keeps moving through Gemini, Mercury's sign. And Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio, reviewing the story. So the Moon is a guest in the house of a host who's going back over everything that was said. Questions over conclusions.

What was said? What did you assume? What haven't you asked because you're afraid of the answer?

Gathering information isn't the same as collecting evidence for the conclusion you already want. If you're only listening for proof that everything goes wrong for you, the eight will never get a hearing.

What Is Jupiter Making Bigger?

Moon sextile Jupiter in Leo, in Mercury's bounds. Jupiter, the great benefic, expands whatever he touches. That makes this emotional expansion. The question is what gets expanded.

Point Jupiter at the eight, and gratitude gets bigger. The progress gets bigger. The joy gets bigger. Point Jupiter at the two, and you make an emotional mountain out of a molehill. Jupiter doesn't check whether the thing deserves to be bigger. He just makes it bigger.

And watch the Leo side. Leo likes center stage. So is the disappointment getting the spotlight?

You don't have to make the pain bigger to prove it mattered.

Get Informed, Then Find the Courage

Then the Moon touches the two planets still locked in a tug of war. First, a trine to Venus, retrograde, back home in Libra. Yesterday the North Node showed Venus the path. Today the Moon says: before you walk it, get informed.

Have the conversation. Ask the questions that tell you what's possible now, not the ones that keep you stuck in what happened. Do you still want what you said you wanted? Or are you still chasing it because changing your mind feels like admitting you wasted your time?

And give the other person room to answer. A conversation can't tell you anything new if you've already written everybody's lines.

About an hour later, a sextile to Chiron in Aries, still at 28, still across from Venus. The Moon reaches across to the wound, not to reopen it, but to give it some courage. Healing doesn't always mean getting back what you lost. Sometimes it means changing your relationship with the loss. Making the amends. Setting the boundary. Or accepting you've done everything you can, and moving forward.

That's Gemini's gift. She doesn't pick a side. She carries the information across. Jupiter asks what you're making bigger. Venus asks what you need to know. Chiron asks what you're willing to do about it.

Sweet Dreams or Nightmares?

Around 9 p.m. Central, the Moon goes home to Cancer, where she can feel instead of figure. And as the clock strikes midnight, she squares Neptune, retrograde in Aries, the planet that rules the dream world.

So will it be sweet dreams, or Freddy Krueger? It is Halloween week.

Fall asleep replaying the two, and Neptune will happily turn them into a horror movie. Fall asleep counting the eight, and you give the dream world something better to work with. And if a dream shakes you, don't treat it like a prophecy. Fog, not fact. Write it down. Keep the dream journal going. Water is still talking.

Which Way Are You Facing?

If you're busy collecting information on your new life path, you have no time, and no need, to focus on what coulda, woulda, or shoulda been.

Replaying it isn't the same as repairing it. You can't build your future by arguing with your past.

So what have you stopped letting count? The people who do show up. The work you did finish. The boundary you finally kept. The conversation you handled differently this time.

The two spilled. The eight are still standing. The bridge is right behind you.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the eight things working in my life right now?

  • Which two have I given veto power over everything else?

  • If those two got fixed tomorrow, would I see the eight, or find two new things?

  • Did I really exhaust every option for repair, or did I just stop trying?

  • What am I letting Jupiter make bigger today?

  • What am I taking to bed with me tonight, the eight or the two?

Turn the situation around by turning yourself around.

Know thyself.

Balance your energy.
