Jupiter meets the South Node: not everything that grows deserves to.

▶ Press play above to hear the full episode. Let's ride.

Earlier this week, Mercury met the Sun. We talked about testing an idea, examining the past, and finding out what was worth bringing forward.

Today, the question changes.

It's no longer just, what can you build?

It's, what needs to be cut back so what matters can grow?

A Season in the Garden

Jupiter has been in Leo since June 30th. The king's trusted advisor, sent to expand the kingdom.

And he did his job. Jupiter grows things. That's what he does. Confidence. Creativity. Visibility. Plans. Projects. Relationships. Commitments. Whatever he touched got bigger.

Growth has its place. But growth without pruning eventually becomes overgrowth.

Walk through any garden that nobody's cut back all season. Some of what grew is beautiful. Some of it is weeds. And some of it is a good plant that got so big it's choking out everything around it.

Jupiter doesn't cut. He expands. He needs somebody with a blade.

The Gardener and the Warrior

Now look at where Jupiter is standing.

Jupiter is within two degrees of the South Node at 26° Leo. And the South Node is the point of decrease. Release. Letting go. Where something gets taken away so something else can breathe.

So the greater benefic, the planet of more, is standing right on the point of less.

That's not a contradiction. That's pruning.

And here comes Mars. He hits 21° Leo, three degrees from Jupiter. The window is open now. The general is walking into the garden.

Remember what we said when Mars squared Mercury. Jupiter brought the growth. Mars brings the shears. Now they're starting to work.

And look at the room they're in. The last stretch of Leo is Mars's decan. Jupiter is sitting in Mars's bounds. The South Node is in Mars's bounds. The cutting happens in the warrior's room.

And Venus is still at the table. Her sextile to Jupiter is still in play. Venus, retrograde at home in Libra, has spent this whole stretch reviewing what she actually values. So she's the one who tells the gardener which branches to keep.

Jupiter grew it. Venus chooses what stays. Mars makes the cut.

A gardener doesn't prune to destroy the plant. He prunes so the plant stops wasting energy on branches that won't bear fruit. Cut back the dead wood, and the living part grows stronger.

So what in your life got overgrown since summer?

The commitment you said yes to that's eating all your time. The side project choking out the main one. The habit that started as relief and turned into a routine you can't break. The relationship you keep watering that never blooms. The obligation you took on to be generous that turned into a weight.

Not all of it is bad. Some of it was good when it started. But is it still feeding you, or are you feeding it?

The Standard of Fairness

The Moon is still traveling through Libra. And in the middle of the night, around 1 a.m. Friday morning, she opposes Saturn, retrograde in Aries.

Here's what makes this opposition interesting. Libra is Saturn's exaltation. The sign where he's honored. Aries is his fall. The sign where he struggles.

So Saturn, in his fall, is looking straight across at the Moon sitting in the sign where he's supposed to be at his best. She's holding the standard of fairness he's supposed to live up to.

And that brings up a question you need before you start cutting.

Are you being fair? Or are you just being hard on yourself?

Saturn retrograde turns the review inward. Where are you holding yourself responsible for things that were never yours to carry? Where did you take on blame that belonged to somebody else? Where did keeping the peace turn into carrying the whole load?

Because pruning is not punishment. You don't cut something back because you're mad at yourself for letting it grow. You cut it back because the plant needs room.

Be fair with the shears.

The Courage to Let Go

But the Moon doesn't stop at Saturn. At the end of the day, right before Friday turns into Saturday, she sextiles Mars in Leo. Air to fire. So the reckoning comes first, in the middle of the night. The nerve shows up by the end of the day.

Saturn shows you what you've been carrying. Mars gives you the nerve to set it down.

You don't just recognize what needs pruning. You have the opportunity to act on it.

Make the call. Cancel the thing. Say the no you've been rehearsing. Hand the responsibility back to the person it belongs to. Close the tab you've had open for six months.

But watch Mars in Leo. There's courage here, and there's pride. Don't cut to prove a point. Don't cut to win. And don't cut so much at once that you take out the healthy branches with the dead ones.

One clean cut. Then step back and look at what has room to grow.

Not Everything That Grows Deserves To

This one speaks to everything. Relationships. Creative work. Business. Commitments. Habits. The way you spend your time.

Jupiter showed you how much you could grow. The South Node shows you what has to go. Saturn asks if you're being fair. Mars hands you the shears.

So ask yourself:

  • What in my life got overgrown since summer?

  • What am I still feeding that stopped feeding me?

  • Am I being fair with myself, or just hard?

  • What responsibility am I carrying that belongs to somebody else?

  • What's the one clean cut I can make?

Growth is a blessing. But a garden needs a gardener and somebody willing to pick up the blade.

Not everything that grows deserves to grow.

Cut it back, so what matters can breathe.
