Essential Dignities Explained: The Royal Court of the Planets
Every planet has a home.
Some places it rules. Some places it's honored. Some places it's a stranger, and some places it can't get comfortable no matter what it does.
That's essential dignity. It tells you how well-resourced a planet is in the sign it's sitting in. Not good or bad. Resourced or not.
The Royal Court
Picture the zodiac as a royal court. The Sun is the king and rules Leo. The Moon is the queen and rules Cancer.
Then the planets line up outward by their distance from the Sun, each one ruling one sign on the king's side and one on the queen's side.
Mercury: Gemini and Virgo
Venus: Taurus and Libra
Mars: Aries and Scorpio
Jupiter: Sagittarius and Pisces
Saturn: Capricorn and Aquarius
Saturn ends up sitting across from the Sun and Moon. The farthest planet you can see, opposite the lights. That symmetry is the whole design.
Domicile: The Planet Is Home
A planet in its own sign has its own tools, its own rules, its own house. It doesn't need permission. Venus in Libra. Mars in Scorpio. Jupiter in Sagittarius.
Exaltation: The Honored Guest
Exaltation is the sign where a planet gets treated like royalty. It's not home, but everybody stands up when it walks in.
Sun: Aries
Moon: Taurus
Mercury: Virgo
Venus: Pisces
Mars: Capricorn
Jupiter: Cancer
Saturn: Libra
Detriment and Fall: Away From Home
Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's home. Mars in Libra. Venus in Aries. The planet still works. It just has to work with somebody else's tools.
Fall is the sign opposite exaltation. The Sun in Libra. The Moon in Scorpio. Less applause, more effort.
A planet in detriment or fall isn't broken. It's working without the home-field advantage. Sometimes that's where the grit comes from.
Triplicity: The Support Team
Each element has three rulers: one for a day chart, one for a night chart, and one that participates in both.
Fire: Sun by day, Jupiter by night, Saturn participating
Earth: Venus by day, Moon by night, Mars participating
Air: Saturn by day, Mercury by night, Jupiter participating
Water: Venus by day, Mars by night, Moon participating
Bounds and Faces: The Fine Print
Bounds split each sign into five uneven slices, each run by one of the five visible planets. They tell you whose neighborhood a planet is standing in, degree by degree.
Here's one to remember: the last bounds of every sign belong to a malefic, Mars or Saturn. That's why the end of a sign can feel like a squeeze.
Faces, also called decans, split each sign into three ten-degree slices. They're the smallest dignity, the planet's face at the door.

How to Use It
Look at where your planets sit. Is any of them home? Honored? Away from home?
Then ask the real question: what is this planet working with, and what is it working without?
